Welcome to the Best Whey Protein Guide. You may have landed here because you have recently begun strength training, body building, or exercising in general. Whatever the case may be, you are interested in finding out more about whey protein and which one is best for a beginner. I feel that using whey can be beneficial in many ways, however, it isn't necessary for muscle building. If anything, it is simply a convenience for those who want to supplement their protein intake but have a hard time fitting in the meals to do so.
It is at its core, a nutritional supplement. Before choosing one for yourself, consider what you are using it for. Do you want to gain weight (bulk-up)? Do you want to use it for its other health benefits? Do you care about sugar substitutes or other artificial ingredients? How fast it absorbs?
These are things to consider because each brand of whey contains different ingredients and different amounts of protein per serving. Taste is another huge factor which you will have to discover on your own through your own trial and error. Eventually you will find the one brand that contains all you require.
That is what this web site is about: helping you make a better choice. Anyone new to whey protein may have a lot of questions. Browse around this web site and read the articles. Leave comments and spark up a conversation.
Thanks for visiting and best of luck on your fitness journey!
There is More to Whey than Maintaining Muscle Mass
Although whey protein is very popular amongst body builders who typically use it to help build and maintain muscle mass, there are many health benefits to consuming it.
Whey protein is a complete protein, containing all of the essential and non-essential amino acids needed by the body. Whey protein is also a rich source of the branched chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine. [source: www.wheyoflife.org]
Possible Health Benefits of Whey
Whey may help reduce overeating by stimulating a satiety effect. This can be a huge help when trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. It may also help prevent muscle loss which can occur as we age. It may also help with an anti-microbial effect against ulcers and other gastric mucosal injuries. Whey may also benefit with cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol and reducing blood pressure.
Types of Whey Protein
There are three types of whey protein available. They include:
- Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC): whey proteins that contain < 90% protein concentration.
- Whey Protein Isolate (WPI): >90% protein concentration and removal of most (if not all) lactose.
- Whey Protein Hydrolysates (WPH): whey protein hydrolysates are produced via enzymatic hydrolysis of either WPCs or WPIs.
Whey Protein Concentrate vs Isolate
Concentrate is the cheapest and most common form of whey protein. It contains a significant amount of lactose and can contain less protein than other types. It isn't filtered as much as isolate so it is less pure. If you are lactose intolerant or tend to be gassy or bloat easily, then concentrate may not be the best choice. Whey isolate is filtered more and contains less fat and lactose. It is considered a pure form of protein but that doesn't necessarily make it the better choice. Isolate contains more protein per serving (90-94%) versus concentrate (70-85%) and thus also makes it more expensive.
Definition of Whey Protein Hydrolysate
Hydrolysates are enzymatically predigested for maximal speed of absorption. Many athletes consume this this type of whey because it is absorbed by the body very rapidly maximizing nutrient delivery to the muscles. Although it is used by many athletes, it isn't commonly used by bodybuilders because it does not contain all of the essential amino acids. This is also a more expensive type of protein.
This type of protein is different from whey in that it constitutes about 80% of milk protein and is slower to digest. It has an anti-catabolic effect. Since it is much slower to digest, it is usually consumed prior to bedtime. It isn't an ideal to use prior to or after a workout. Whey and casein can work great together. Whey protein can be used as a pre or post workout shake as it rapidly increases protein synthesis. Casein is ideal before bedtime as it blocks protein breakdown.
